A jersey friendly-BPA free bottle for all cyclists combining the hydration pack with a bottle.
We would love to see a larger valve opening, and for that matter we’d like to 86 the old school popup valve altogether in favor of the newer heart valve ‘on demand’ type of mouthpiece. A future insulated version and more color options would be cool too.
The BackBottle provides a more comfortable option for carrying additional hydration.
Seeing this bottle we were really excited try it out. The first time we used the BackBottle we wondered why it has taken so long for someone to come up with this concept. This was first time that we have reviewed a product coming from a kickstarter campaign, which is pretty cool. After seeing the success of Brian Davis’ first successful kickstarter campaign, Fix It Sticks, we knew this bottle would be something interesting to try out.
The idea for the BackBottle was hatched from the frustration of not being able to find bottles that fit well in a jersey. So...he took the frustration a step further and made one of his own. This bottle is ideal for those situations where you are on a long ride and you need that little bit of extra hydration, or in a self supported race situation where you have only to depend on yourself for hydration.
Those of us that have had our asses in the saddle for 3 plus hours know that comfort is what it is all about. That round bottle in your jersey might not be annoying at the start, but it sure will be a few hours down the road. The BackBottle provides a secure feeling, and even when climbing or having to come out of the saddle the bottle stays in position, and never feels like it is about to launch out.
Some of you might be wondering if you can use it in standard bottle cages. Here is the official position from the kickstarter campaign Q&A page:
The safest answer for me is no. But it seems to work well enough on most carbon cages, but the standard cheaper cages, no it doesn't.
In our tests it worked well in our carbon cages, and was a good option for our aero bar bottle cage as well.
The BackBottle technical specs:
The comfort level was great with the bottle stashed in the back of our jersey, but at times we did have a hard time actually getting it out of our jersey pocket. Overall, it is a much improved and more comfortable feel than riding for hours with a regular bottle on your back. We have gotten really used to larger valve opening on the bottles we use, and would have liked to have seen this here.
Estimated MSRP is around $12. A little higher than your standard bottle, but well worth it for the versatility in your ride.
TriBomb Bottom Line
The BackBottle is a great, comfortable alternative to the standard bottle for your jersey. We will be ordering a few more ourselves!
